GAME SUMMARY

"We are definitely happy to get that first win of the season out of the way, and for it to be in a League match, that makes it all the better for us. Now we want to build off this win and take the momentum into our next match tomorrow at Middletown."

The Skyhawk tennis team hosted Piqua on Tuesday evening at the Community Park courts and came away with their first win of the season by a 3-2 score.

The doubles teams carried the day for Fairborn as both won handily. The #1 team of Caleb Smith and Nghi Nguyen rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ethan Gevedon and Alex Rossman. Coach Coy changed up the second doubles team and that new team of Harry Huynh and Silas Smith won convincingly, 6-0, 6-1, over Ryn Parker and Stephen Dolder. Both teams came off the courts about the same time, and their wins gave Fairborn the victory because Piqua had to forfeit the #3 singles spot, so Fairborn's Janiel Buita got the win without having to hit a single shot.

Fairborn's singles had a tougher night. Brandon Schmidt struggled with consistency against Piqua's Sean Hatke, and dropped a 3-6, 1-6 decision.

At #2 singles, Mei Linn Kuttila lost her first set 2-6, then bounced back to take the second set 6-3. Since the match had already been decided, the pair played a "Super tie-breaker" to determine the winner of the match. Kuttila got off to a slow start and never fully recovered as she lost 7-10 to Piqua's Demi Nicholas.

The win brings Fairborn's overall and conference record to 1-2. The team begins a tough stretch of three straight road trips, starting off with Middletown on Wednesday, followed by Conference trips to Greenville (Thursday) and Sidney (Friday) to finish off the week.

"I was very happy with our overall play tonight. The doubles teams were hungry for a win and they played hard and didn't let up even though they had their matches in hand pretty quickly. Mei Linn is still adjusting to playing outdoors, in Finland she played almost all the time indoors and never had to deal with the wind or the cold while playing. I felt like Brandon was still trying to figure out how he wants to play... what style to use... and his opponent tonight was very unorthodox in his style of play and that threw him off a little as well. I hope this was a learning night for Brandon and he'll come out with more confidence tomorrow."
