The Fairborn boys tennis team traveled to Middletown on Wednesday, hoping to carry with them the momentum of Tuesday night's win over Piqua. While the Doubles teams did continue their winning ways, the three singles spots all struggled en route to the 2-3 loss to the Middies.
"Our singles players have got to improve their in-match performance. That is on me. I've spent a lot of time working to get the doubles teams prepared to play, and that has been to the detriment of our singles play. I am going to have to do a better job of getting the singles players better prepared for future matches."
The two doubles teams dominated their opponents. Caleb Smith and Nghi Nguyen rolled to an easy 6-0, 6-2 win at the #1 doubles position, while Caleb Smith and Janiel Buita did even better, winning 6-0, 6-1 at the #2 spot. "These guys are getting better every day. You can see their confidence building, and they are taking instruction during the match and using it in their play. I am excited to see how far they can come over the course of the season."
It was another story at singles, where Middletown dominated. Brandon Schmidt, Mei Linn Kuttila and Harry Huynh won a combined 4 games in going down to defeat. " I definitely don't see the same level of confidence in our singles players. They have definitely faced some tough competition and that impacts their results, but we need them to have a better idea of what they want to do out there, and to execute better. They are relaxed and confident in practice, but that goes away by the time they step onto the court against someone wearing a different colored shirt."
The team, now 1-3 overall, travels west to Greenville on Thursday for a GWOC American match.
