The Fairborn boys tennis team finally got the chance to host a GWOC South opponent on Tuesday night and while the score looked all too familiar, the effort and results were vastly improved.
"We knew if we wanted to compete in the South, that this was the team we had to beat. We played some of our best tennis of the season tonight and unfortunately it wasn't enough. We were in every match though, and that hasn't always been the case this year."
Trotwood took the match by a score of 5-0.
At #1 singles Brandon Schmidt fell behind early, rallied for a late first set lead, but couldn't quite hold on, falling 5-7 in the first set, then 0-6 in the second. "The best we effort we have seen from Brandon all season in that first set, it was a tough one to lose."
At #2 singles, Meil Linn Kuttila lost a tough 3-6, 3-6 match, and at #3 singles, Harry Huynh also played a very competitive match before going down to a 2-6, 4-6 defeat.
"Our singles were extremely competitive tonight. I feel like their early season struggles probably had affected their confidence, and with a little more confidence tonight, the outcomes might have been different."
While the scores weren't quite as good, the doubles matches were equally competitive. Caleb Smith and Nghi Nguyen fell 3-6, 0-6 at #1 doubles, while Silas Smith and Janiel Buita lost 2-6, 1-6 at #2 doubles.
"We are starting to see more and more flashes of improvement and competitiveness out there in doubles, as well as in singles. So many of these players are just getting out on the courts for the first time, and they are making great strides, but they are still playing opponents with much more on court experience, so that does put them at a little bit of an advantage that they will have to overcome throughout the remainder of this season, then work on eliminating over the summer."
The loss drops Fairborn to 1-6 overall, and 1-5 in league play. The Skyhawks get a rare non-league match tonight as Valley View comes to town, then its right back to leaugue play on Thursday with a short trip to Stebbins before wrapping up the week by hosting Butler Friday afternoon at the Community Park Courts.
