Boys Varsity Tennis
|Fairborn High School||1|
|Greenon High School||4|
Coming off their big win over Yellow Springs, the Fairborn Boy's tennis team was right back at it on Thursday night as they played host to Greenon on Senior Night at the Community Park Courts. The guests dampened the festivities by leaving with a 4-1 victory over the host Skyhawks.
Greenon put out a strong group of singles players, but at #1 Brandon Schmidt played perhaps his best match of the season. He led midway through the first set before ultimately falling 5-7, then losing the second set 2-6. Mei Lin Kuttila came up against a very strong opponent and the result for her was an 0-6, 0-6 loss. At #3 singles, Caleb Smith struggled early, but played well late in a 2-6, 4-6 loss.
In doubles action, Harry Huyhn and Janiel Buita were bested 0-6, 2-6 but a strong Greenon #1 doubles team.
The lone win of the night for Fairborn came at #2 doubles where Ngji Nguyen and Silas Smith won their second straight match. They won a tight first set by winning a tie-breaker (7-1) to take the set 7-6, then they carried that momentum into the second set, which they held on to take by a 6-4 count. "These two freshmen get better each time out. They were a little inconsistent tonight, but they were strong in the first set tie-breaker, then after letting Greenon battle back to 4-4 in the second set, they got behind 0-40 in the next game I was afraid they were going to let that set get away. We encouraged them and told them not to worry so much about the game or set score and just play a point at a time.. Whether that worked or they just refocused themselves, they were able to come back from 0-40 to get to deuce and ultimately win that game, then close out the match. We were very proud of them."
The loss drops Fairborn to 2-10 on the season. They will host West Carrollton on Friday in a make-up match, that is also an important GWOC South match.
