The Fairborn Boy's tennis team finally got to open their season on Friday as they hosted GWOC American North foe Troy at the Community Park Courts. It was a cold and windy day but that didn't seem to bother the visitors from Troy as they swept past the Skyhawks 5-0.
"This was a tough way to open the season, especially with so many players playing in their first career matches, but I thought the kids handled themselves well and they got a taste of what life in the GWOC is like. This match was definitely one of the toughest we will play all season. Troy is always very tough, and on Friday 5 of their 7 players were seniors so I think they will definitely be a force in the GWOC as the season goes on."
Making his Skyhawk debut at #1 singles was Senior Brandon Schmidt. He drew the assignment of facing Troy's Shane Essick. While he played well, Schmidt fell to Essick 1-6, 0-6.
At #2 singles for Fairborn it was Mei Linn Kuttila making her debut against Troy's Elijah Sadler. Mei Linn fell to Sadler by a final score of 0-6, 1-6. Rounding out the singles for Fairborn was Harry Huynh, the team's lone returnee from last season. Though he showed much improvement over last season, Huynh fell to Troy's Andrew Magoteaux 0-6, 0-6.
"I was pleased with the effort tonight, but between our inexperience, their experience and the hard gusty wind, it was just too much for us tonight."
Both doubles teams for Fairborn struggled and were blanked 0-6, 0-6. At #1 doubles, Caleb Smith and Nghi Nguyen were bested by Jackson Goodall and Nathan Kleptz. At #2 doubles, Silas Smith and Janiel Buita lost to Anoop Patel and John Wherkamp to complete the match.
IN JV action, Carlos Gonzalez fell in singles 1-8.Hannah Byczkowski and Juliana Boyd fell 3-8 in doubles action. The lone victory on the night came in the final JV doubles match of the night, where Fairborn Foreign Exchange Students Yudha Andayana and Mei Linn Kuttila paired up for a 6-1 win.
With all of the rainouts over the past few weeks, the upcoming week will be a busy one for the Skyhawks. The team will travel to Tipp City on Monday, host Piqua on Tuesday then finish the week with three straight road trips... Middletown on Wednesday, Greenville on Thursday and to Sidney on Friday.
