Friday the 13th was an unlucky day for the Fairborn Boy's Tennis team as they took a long road trip up I-75 to the Sidney Athletic Complex where they were stung by the Yellow Jackets by a final score of 5-0.
"We tried some lineup changes to shake things up a little bit, but we came out flat and were not able to put up much of a fight against a pretty good team. The result was an ugly loss, there's no other way to put it. We were not really competitive at any spot and that's disheartening. This is a team we were pretty equal with 4-5 years ago. Over that period of time they have made positive strides and we have remained pretty much the same, and have had difficulty maintaining any continuity in the program. That must change if we are going to compete with Sidney or any other team in the GWOC North."
The scores were as follows, at #1 singles Brandon Schmidt fell to Prem Dev 0-6, 1-6. Nghi Nguyen lost his first varsity singles match at #2 singlesn1-6, 0-6 to Daichi Urata, and Mei Linn Kuttila dropped her match 0-6, 0-6 at the #3 spot to Akansh Mani.
In doubles, the second generation "Smith Brothers' team (cousins Caleb and Silas) lost their first match together 0-6, 0-6, and at #2 doubles Harry Huynh and Janiel Buita lost 0-6, 1-6.
"If there was any positives to come out of the match, it would be that we learned a little bit about what some of our players are capable of, and we found out which ones are willing to try things in the hopes of having better results. We had some doubles players who were definitely having a rough day out there and we made a couple of suggestions on things to try, and to their credit they did try them and while the result was still the same, they did do better, and got a little bit of a confidence boost from that little change. Hopefully that will carry over into next week."
There were two JV doubles matches that ended in identical 2-8 scores. Juliana Boyd and Hannah Byczkowski dropped one match while Yudha Andayana and Quincie Kehoe teamed up in the second match.
"We don't say much about the JV but they are doing a great job of having fun and improving every match, and even in defeats, they come off the courts having improved and done something better since their previous match. Most of the JV are juniors so that is encouraging because they will be back next year and we will need their contributions on the varsity level."
While this week was mostly travel, next week the Skyhawks are home 4 out of 5 nights, with their lone road trip being to Stebbins on Thursday. The week starts on Monday when Dixie comes to town for a 5:15 start time at the Community Parks Courts.
