WALTER E. STEBBINS HIGH SCHOOL: 5
The boys tennis team traveled to Riverside Thursday night to face GWOC rival Stebbins, and had to face the Indians minus two varsity players. What was going to be a tough task anyway, turned into an impossible task as the hosts came away with a 5-0 win over the Skyhawks.
Perhaps the best match of the night was at #1 singles where Brandon Schmidt fell 4-6, 5-7. Schmidt had leads in both sets but was unable to get the key points to pull out the win. At #2 singles, Mei Lin Kuttila played a tight match early on before falling 3-6, 0-6.
On the other two courts were the doubles matches. Silas Smith and Janiel Buita moved up to play #1 on Thursday, and while they played well, they lost 1-6, 0-6. Making their Varsity debut for Fairborn, Hannah Byczkowski and Juliana Boyd drew the assignment of playing #2 doubles, and while they did a good job, they could not overcome the team from Stebbins and they fell 1-6, 0-6.
The final match of the night was at #3 singles, where Caleb Smith made his first start as a singles player. Smith struggled early but came on late, before ultimately losing 3-6, 5-7.
"The kids are trying, they play hard, they are improving, we just can't get over the hump. But we will keep working at it and keep trying to get better each match."
The loss drops the Skyhawks to1-8 overall, and 1-6 in GWOC action. Butler comes to visit on Friday. Next week will wrap up the home portion of the season, culminating in Thursday's Senior Night activities against Greenon.
