YELLOW SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL: 2
Things didn't look promising early on as the Fairborn boy's tennis team fell behind visiting Yellow Springs, but they stayed focused and pulled off wins on the last two courts in play to steal a 3-2 win from their Greene County guests.
"I was not feeling good about things early on. Brandon got down early, #1 doubles got down, and #2 doubles trailed early. Things didn't look good. We didn't look good, but to our kids' credit they hung in there and didn't let things get them down. I was very proud of the team tonight."
#1 singles matches are never easy and tonight was no exception. Yellow Springs' Forrest Rowe played a very strong match and routed Brandon Schmidt 0-6, 0-6. Meanwhile the doubles team of Harry Huynh and Janiel Buita was losing 1-6, 0-6 to Peter Day and Tyler Linkhart.
When the #2 doubles team of freshmen Nghi Nguyen and Silas Smith fell behind 3-1 in their opening set against Cassie Kludt and Jonah Trillana, things weren't looking good for the Skyhawks.
"They won the 5th game so they were down 2-3 at the changeover and I tried to fire them up and tell them I knew they could play better, that I had seem them play better. I think about that time they were realizing that if they just bore down, they could win this match."
Bear down they did. From being down 3-1 in the first set, they won 11 of the next 12 games, taking the match 6-3 and 6-1, and giving the home team some hope.
By this time Caleb Smith had taken the court at #3 singles, and he got ahead early, and won handily, defeating Abby McAnerney 6-1, 6-2.
The match would come down to the #2 singles spot. Mei Lin Kuttila dropped the first set 3-6, but had rallied from 1-4, so she had momentum going into the second set. That momentum led to a 6-4 second set win, so the match at #2 singles and the team match all came down to that third set. Kuttila got a good 2-1 lead, then with her teammates cheering her on, she won 4 of the next 5 games to take the final set 6-2. It was her first win of the season, and it gave Fairborn the 3-2 win over Yellow Springs.
"Mei Lin did a great job and she really kept her cool out there. She knew she was the deciding match, and while i'm sure that was always running through her mind, we did the best we could to keep her focused on winning a point at a time, and a game at a time. I'm very proud of her. It was a big win for her and for our team."
The win bring the Skyhawks' record to 2-9 with two more home matches remaining this week, then three road matches next week to close out the dual match portion of the schedule. Thursday Greenon will visit the Community Park Courts for Senior night, then Friday West Carrollton will come to town for a GWOC South match.
Senior night festivities start at 4:15 on Thursday with a celebration of seniors Brandon Schmidt, Mei Lin Kuttila, Harry Huynh, and Yudah Andayana to follow the match.
