Boys tennis gets 4-1 win over Piqua

Game Date
Apr 30, 2018
Score
SKYHAWKS: 4
PIQUA HIGH SCHOOL: 1

The Fairborn boys tennis team traveled to Piqua for a non-league match on Monday night, minus two varsity players (out of seven). Fortunately the hosts were missing three players from their lineup. In the end, the Skyhawks earned their second win over Piqua on the season, this time by a 4-1 count.

Playing for the first time at #1 singles for Fairborn was Caleb Smith, who had the "fortune" of facing off against veteran #1 singles player Sean Hatke of Piqua. "Hatke has only three losses on the season and he handled Brandon (Schmidt) early in the season so Caleb had a tough assignment. I thought he played very well. He fought and had several long games and points, but Hatke was just too much for him." The Piqua senior won 6-1, 6-0.

At #2 singles Mei Linn Kuttila played Alex Rossman. "Mei Lin took a little bit to settle in and get comfortable because Rossman was very inconsistent and was spraying balls all over the place tonight. Once she got settled in and figured out how to approach this obstacle, she was fine." Kuttila won 6-3, 6-1.

#3 singles saw Nghi Nguyen get another shot at singles as he played against Ethan Gruedon. "Nghi had a much better chance than in his first singles match (against Sidney). Nghi took control early and got better as the match went on." Nguyen got the win 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Fairborn got wins at both spots via forfeits. Silas Smith and Hannah Byczkowski were credited with the win at #1 doubles, and it was Janiel Buita and Yudah Andayana getting the win at #2 doubles for the Skyhawks.

Fairborn is now 4-10 on the season and will travel to Xenia on Tuesday for a 5:30 match at the Fairgrounds courts.
