The Fairborn Boy's tennis team wrapped up its week-long home stand by hosting GWOC North rival Sidney at the Community Park Courts. The Yellow Jackets boast one of the strongest singles trios in the league, and they quickly swept through Fairborn's singles en route to a 5-0 win.
"Their top three players are as strong as any we've seen all year. They had no problem with our kids today."
Among Fairborn's singles players, only Caleb Smith at #2 singles managed even a game (2-6, 0-6). Nghi Nguyen at #1 and Janiel Buita at #3 lost by identical 0-6, 0-6 scores.
Fairborn was much more competitive in the doubles matches.
"Silas and Theo played by far their best match of the year. I thought they were going to pull their match out, but in the end they got nervous and tentative and it cost them. I'm proud of the improvement they have made over the course of the season."
Silas Smith and Theo Pradelle got behind early and ended up losing their first set 6-3, but got out front in the second set and stayed ahead until Sidney's duo caught them at 4-4. They were tied again at 5-5 but then Sidney took the last two games of the set to take the match 6-3, 7-5.
At #2 doubles, Sam Steck and Wylie Parker won their first set 6-3, but Sidney came back to take the second set 6-4, then won the third set super tie-breaker 10-6 to take the match and complete the sweep for Sidney.
The loss drops the Skyhawks to 2-6 overall for the season and 0-4 in GWOC league play. Fairborn hits the road on Monday for a match at Northridge, then Tuesday at Piqua, and Wednesday at Yellow Springs before returning home Thursday to host Greenville.
