The Fairborn Boy's tennis team made the short trip to Yellow Springs on Wednesday night hoping to win back to back matches, but the hosts had other plans as they were able to pull out a 3-2 win over the visiting Skyhawks.
"We had real good performances from Janiel Buita at #3 singles, and our #2 doubles team of Wylie Parker and Sam Steck. They were solid from start to finish. With some of the others, they had some really good moments, but they had inconsistent nights and just could string several solid points together to get big games when they needed them."
Steck and Parker cruised to their sixth win of the season together (6-3) at #2 doubles with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
"These two keep playing better and better as they gain confidence. Both are first year players, but they are playing as well consistently as anyone else on the team. They have become a crucial point for us."
Janiel Buita brought home the other point for Fairborn as he won 6-2, 6-4.
"Janiel played a really strong first set then relaxed a little and let his opponent into the match. He actually fell behind 3-4 in second set, and we had a talk with him and pointed out that he was starting to play a little bit timid and safe, and he was letting the other guy back into the match. We suggested to him that he needed to be a little more aggressive and attack the other guy's backhand more. To his credit, he did just that, and he won the next three games handily to win the set and the match."
Things did not go so well at the remaining positions. Both Nghi Nguyen (0-6, 1-6) and Caleb Smith (1-6, 0-6) ame up against strong players and while they had strong moments, they were unable to overcome their opposition.
At #1 doubles, Silas Smith and Theo Pradelle were coming off two straight wins, and two solid performances, but they had a rough night against Yellow Springs, losing 1-6, 2-6.
"Consistency was an issue tonight for #1 doubles. They had moments where they looked really good, and in fact this was probably the best match Theo has played for us, but there were also a lot of moments where they missed shots or failed to make the right shot, and they ended up taking the loss as a result."
The loss drops Fairborn to 3-8 for the season, and sets them up for a home match on Thursday against Greenville. Afterwards, the team will take a week off from match play over Spring Break.
